Here's how it works.
Imagine that the population in the United States were divided into two categories: Those who have significant cultural barriers to hearing the gospel (language barriers, racial barriers, past hang ups/experiences, etc.) and those who might have some light hang ups, or none at all.
We'll call the first group the "Blue Ocean." In the blue ocean, people are unwilling to attend a church in their neighborhood. For whatever reason, they might never accept an invitation to attend. In the "Red Ocean," however, people will probably attend a church if they are invited, or if they see a flier or sign. Both oceans need Jesus, but one ocean is significantly harder to reach.
In the United States, about 1/3 of the population is in the Red Ocean (seekers and believers), while the remaining 2/3 of the population are in the Blue Ocean (avoiding the Church).
The problem today is that almost all churches are fishing in the Red Ocean. In other words, they way we "do" church will only reach those people who are already willing. We use excellent music, killer kids and student ministries, dynamic preaching, and a litany of other strategies to attract people in our doors. But the people we're reaching are low hanging fruit. Well, sort of. They're more willing. They're also already likely attending another church. And this is why churches fight over members, get territorial, and most of our church growth is really just shuffling the deck by drawing crowds from other churches.
If we were truly interested in reaching lost people, wouldn't we be doing more to reach people in the Blue Ocean? Wouldn't we be doing whatever it takes to reach people who will likely never just "show up" to church on a Sunday?
This is what I'm praying through. How can we, as churches (and more specifically, the church that me and Sarah are planting in Nashville) reach the Blue Ocean? One thing is for sure. What we've been doing in churches in the past isn't going to work anymore. We need new strategies, new ways of doing things. We need Biblical, prayer-saturated, God-honoring methods that enable people to meet Jesus!
More on that later. In the meantime, pray for us as we seek God for answers through Godly counsel, prayer, strategic planning, etc. After all, we aren't here to merely talk about this stuff. Pretty soon, we'll be hitting the ground running and we're going to need some action!
